Sad news

Post by wineaux » Sun Nov 08, 2015 11:45 pm

It is with a great deal of sorrow and disbelief that I must announce the untimely passing of Doug Kemp, who used to post here under the handle bassmanD. Doug had a heart attack Saturday. He was 59.

Doug was a good musician and a talented luthier. Just the other day we were making great plans to get together in early December. Play a song for old Doug, as he liked to call himself, and if you are so inclined, say a prayer for Vanessa and the rest of his family.

Very sad news. I only talked to and met Doug a few times around when I bought the Epiphone from him. Prayers for Vanessa and the family.

I'm deeply saddened to hear of Doug's passing. I was out of the country for the week prior and hadn't known about it. He was a good man and I was proud to call him my friend and brother. I'll really miss him. Prqyers for Vanessa and his family.

So sorry to get this news so late. Doug was a friend and bass brother. Jack and I have spent many hours talking bass and playing. The bass world lost a great advocate and low ender. I will miss you greatly. Prayers for Vanessa and family.

For Jack, Basshawg and others who may be interested, Vanessa (Doug's wife) and Greg (his son) are planning a memorial service in Elyria, Ohio on Jan. 23. It will filled with music. I'll be playing a song I wrote, using Doug's Banzer guitar. We both loved that guitar, but he always made it clear it was the one instrument he owned that he would never consider trading to me.

The last time I talked to Doug, he picked up the phone and said, "No, you can't have the Banzer." But at the end of the conversation, he said, "Seriously, if anything ever happens to me, I've told Vanessa the Banzer is yours." Two days later, he was gone.

I'll post more details -- time, place, etc. -- as the date gets closer.

I'll close with some advice. If you have something to say somebody, don't wait. Say it now. You never know.

I have been away from this forum for quite awhile. Life interrupts our passions sometimes, but this is very sad news. I exchanged some messages with Doug a few times and he seemed to be very decent guy. May the good Lord bless and keep his family.
