Re: Mic'ing your bass

When I had an AT Pro35, I'd mic near the ff hole. When I switched to the ATM350, the ff position sounded too muddy, too boomy. After a bit of trial and error, I ended up between the bridge feet. It was interesting since these are mics from the same company, with a very similar response, on the same...

Hey Bob, that's a very cool situation you've found yourself in - embrace it and you'll do fine! :D

Re: Wintergrass 2011

Hey Jake sounds like a great time was had. Paul Sato and Craig Wilson aresome really good friends of mine. Great pickers too. We met those guys at Wintergrass 6 or 7 years ago and we've had a 'Wintergrass Band' with them ever since. They;'re trying to talk us into going to Grass Valley so we can pi...

Re: Playing Bluegrass With An Electric Bass

I've also recently foamed my pbass too. It has that nice thumpy sound but I prefer the palm mute sound. I use flatwounds by the way. And the tone is all the way down. I think I need to learn how to stop the strings from sustaining. Putting a small sponge under the strings right up against the bridg...

Wintergrass 2011

What a great weekend! The new Bellevue Hyatt hotel has eclipsed the old Sheraton in every way and is setting a new standard in indoor bluegrass. We stayed in a 'Jamming Suite' and it was terrific - lots of room for people and instruments and a good-sounding room to play in. There also seemed to be p...

Re: 5th's Tuning

Fifths tuning strings are designed to be tuned C-G-D-A from low to high. I have a couple of jazz clients who tune that way but I think it would make playing bluegrass a lot more difficult. You would have to finger your Root-Fives backwards in the lower positions and it would displace your ability to...

Re: Preamps

Francis Deck's FDeck Pre is the perfect tool to help you achieve good sound on stage if you use a pickup. 1 - It has a buffer circuit that loads your pickup in a way your amp (usually) won't, so you get a nice fat bassy sound. 2 - It has a sweepable high-pass filter that you can use to remove infras...

Re: In Ear Monitors

No. When we're in charge of the sound we use 2 LD condensers for the main vocal mics plus 3 SD condensers for mandolin, guitar and banjo. The bass has its own clip-on AT350 and on bigger stages we'll run an Underwood on the bass into an amp at stage left for monitoring purposes, mainly to keep us in...

Re: In Ear Monitors

Our band is saving up for an Audio Technica M2 System. The AT M2 transmitter is around $500 with one receiver and additional receivers are $350 each.We would only need one transmitter plus three extra body packs because like the OP we'd want to hear the same mix across the stage so as to know if we ...
